PFCU was founded in September 1935 by a small group of City of Pasadena employees who wanted a safe place to save and borrow money. Our first "office" was a window in the City Treasurer's office. In 1980, the Credit Union moved from the tower of Pasadena City Hall to our present location on South Fair Oaks Avenue where we pioneered the redevelopment of the area. Six employees settled into our 5000 square foot office. By 1985, plans had begun for the expansion to the present building, which was completed in December 1990 and increased the office space to 20,000 square feet.
For many years, our field of membership was limited to City of Pasadena employees and their families. In order to provide members with additional services such as checking, VISA cards and ATM cards, we needed to expand our membership so we began to look for ways to grow. As a result, the City of South Pasadena FCU, James Montgomery Engineers FCU, Star News FCU and City of San Gabriel FCU were merged into PFCU. We have also grown by adding new companies and organizations into our field of membership. PFCU now serves over 100 Select Employer Groups (SEGs) ranging from small business to large corporations. We are continually adding new organizations and providing the benefit of credit union membership to their employees.
